English Hub Secondary Pilot
The English Hub Secondary Pilot is an emerging strand of work designed to explore how the principles of effective literacy teaching can be strengthened as pupils move from primary into secondary education. As part of this pilot, we will audit 10 secondary schools, gaining a clear understanding of current practice and identifying priority areas for development. From this group, three partner schools will receive more intensive support through dedicated Literacy Specialist Support Days, allowing for deeper collaboration and tailored guidance.
This pilot focusses on identifying and addressing barriers to literacy in Key Stage 3, supporting schools to develop consistent, evidence-informed practice that helps all students access the full curriculum. Through collaborative research, professional development, and structured intervention, the pilot aims to refine and test models of support that could inform future national practice.
We also have a dedicated working party that meets each half term to review, discuss, and agree best practice linked to key elements of the Challenge Checklist. This collaborative forum helps to shape consistent approaches, share emerging insights, and ensure that pilot activity remains grounded in evidence and aligned across all participating schools.
As the work progresses, insights and learning from the pilot will shape how English Hubs can best contribute to improving literacy outcomes across the secondary sector.
