DfE Funding

English Hubs are able to provide DfE funding to state-funded schools.

The funding is available for schools to purchase a DfE validated Systematic, Synthetic, Phonics (SSP) programme. This includes staff training, online portals, teaching resources and decodable books linked to the school's chosen SSP programme.

The funding can also be used for refresher training, renewing online subscriptions and/or replenishing resources and decodable books.

List of DfE Validated SSP Programmes

There are two 'pots' of DfE funding your school may be able to access.

English Hub Funding

Schools can access matched funding, up to £3000.

Where a school meets two (or more) of the following criteria, we may be able to waiver the requirement for matched funding and fund up to £6000.

DfE Criteria for Funding

Hubs must prioritise schools that meet two or more of the following criteria:

  • lower than average percentage of pupils meeting the expected standard in the most recent PSC;

  • low attainment in the bottom 20% of children;

  • a higher than average proportion of children eligible for Pupil Premium;

  • Ofsted judgement of Requires Improvement or Inadequate;

  • a high proportion of groups considered hard to reach, such as EAL, FSM, travellers etc;

  • schools referred by local partners (e.g. NLEs, LAs);

  • schools that sit in a Priority Education Investment Area (PEIA) or an Education Investment Area (EIA)

Accelerator Funding

Accelerator Funding is available for state-funded Primary schools Infant schools, Junior schools, Special and Alternative Provision (AP) schools.

(Special schools and APs must have primary aged children on roll).

Hubs will prioritise schools that match the criteria for English Hub funding (as above), but we may also fund schools that:

  • Have Ofsted ratings ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, but where practice indicates a risk of declining standards.
  • Have a Pupil Premium percentage equal to or below the national average.

Schools not in an EIA can access matched funding, up to £3000.

Schools in an EIA can access 75% of up to £9000.
